Air Force Champagne Flight

Last 26 June 2012 was the Champagne Flight of my father-in-law, Major General Joel C Marayag AFP, at the Fernando Air Base, Lipa, City, Batangas.

So what is a champagne flight? don't ask me about the history. I have no idea how it started but all I know is that all the Air Force Generals who have successfully graduated from the Air Force Flying School during the early years of their Military Career, and is up for retirement is given this beautiful tradition of having the chance to fly a certain air craft of the Philippine Air Force for the last time, and to celebrate it as well after :)

This is the hangar of the Fernando Air Base with my dad-in-law's name written under the welcome sign :)
My brother-in-law and husband assisting their dad for today's event.
Arrival honors are given to welcome the guest of honor, in this case, General Marayag.

A briefing is necessary before every flight to ensure the safety of the pilot and everyone else aboard :)
 Everyone's serious and so attentive...
...and now it's time to wear the gears...
Check up of the air craft before boarding :)

A photo of today's star pilot and his pilot sons  (who unfortunately did not board because the star pilot said he might get the controls wrong if people he really knows are watching) before take off :)

It so happens that next week, 06 July will be the celebration of this year's Air Force Day, so other pilots are practicing the fly by, and it looked as if the fly by was part of today's event :) It was amazing!!!!!!
Another tradition is that after the pilot has landed and the air craft has come to a full stop, he will be carried out of the plane until the platform inside the hangar :)
The Air Education Training Center Commander, MGen Rene Samonte AFP, giving the champagne bottle.
Popping of the Champagne Bottle Cork, (it is after all, a champagne flight, so there should really be champagne)
 A toast with his 2 boys :)

After the toast, he gave a speech and mentioned how lucky he is and how happy he is with the twists and turns in his career, and of course, he never forgot to mention how fulfilled he is having 2 pilot sons. One, a Naval Aviator, and the other also an Air Force Pilot :)
The practicing Fly By Planes (T-41 and SF) came as if they applauded the General's speech :)
The Men of our family :)
 (boys at heart)
A family picture was definitely in order :) It was just too bad that 2 sisters-in-law and 2 kids, and one husband were not able to attend but this day turned out to be really cool. Plus, the weather rained about an hour after the event :)
Hope you enjoyed today's entry! :)

-Mil Besos y Abrazos!! :)
